Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

NBIS (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden) is looking for an engaged and knowledgeable research infrastructure specialist in artificial intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) with a focus on life science, or alternatively, life science with a focus on AI/ML (or equivalent). You will work closely with researchers, engineers, and other experts within the Support for Computational Resources unit at NBIS and related organisations, notably SciLifeLab, National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), and EuroHPC. Your mission will be to support and develop AI/ML solutions for advanced life science applications, focusing on strengthening Swedish and European research and innovation. Our goal is that all scientists that could benefit from large-scale compute and storage systems can do so with minimal effort and maximum scientific output.

NBIS (https://nbis.se) is a national research infrastructure in rapid development with over 120 staff providing support, tools and training in bioinformatics to the Swedish life science research community. NBIS constitutes the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se), a national resource that provides advanced technologies and technical know-how in molecular biosciences. NBIS is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological information. Our work environment in Uppsala is characterised by curiosity, competence, engagement, brainstorming and enjoyable coffee breaks.

Duties

The role will focus on supporting researchers in life science more generally with managing data, software, tools, and support on nationally and internationally available computational resources, including the new AI Factories and EuroHPC resources, at NAISS and elsewhere.

The Work Tasks Will Include Among Other Things

  • Helping researchers and engineers manage large-scale data.
  • Working with sensitive human data in secure compute environments.
  • Developing and implementing AI/ML methods (e.g., machine learning, deep learning) for life science research.
  • Collaborating with research groups to identify needs and opportunities for AI/ML support in their projects.
  • Contributing to the development of AI infrastructure and tools.
  • Participating in training initiatives, workshops, and knowledge transfer within academia.
  • Documenting and disseminating results in scientific publications and/or technical reports.

NBIS staff are offered the opportunity to allocate up to 20% of their time to develop professional and technical skills, both to stay current in their own scientific field and to broaden their knowledge and skills in other subjects.

Requirements

The person we are looking for must have:

  • A degree within life sciences, computer science, or other relevant field.
  • Documented work with methods for AI/ML applied in life sciences.
  • Strong social skills, good collaboration abilities, and the capacity to take initiative.
  • Good communication skills in English, both verbal and written.

We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Additional Qualifications

It is considered advantageous if the candidate has documented experience in:

  • Working with high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn).
  • AI/ML applications in life science.
  • Large-scale data management (databases, data curation, metadata management, FAIR, etc.).
  • Project management or project coordination.
  • Provision of support to HPC users.
  • Handling sensitive personal data and information security.
  • Collaboration with industrial actors or EU projects.
  • Strong ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Teaching at the university level.
  • Good communication skills in Swedish.
