Lead Innovation. Engineer the Future.

NRL are recruiting a Database & Control Systems Engineer on a long-term contract (inside IR35) to support high-profile infrastructure and automation projects across the UK’s most regulated sectors. This is your opportunity to bring your technical expertise into a mission-critical environment—where your work will directly shape the performance, security, and reliability of industrial control systems.

This is your chance to:

🔧 Engineer integrated solutions – designing and implementing robust SQL-based databases within PLC/SCADA control systems.
📊 Optimise performance – through smart data modelling, indexing, and scripting in SQL and Python.
🧠 Be the technical authority – producing high-quality documentation and guiding multi-disciplinary teams through complex project lifecycles.
🌍 Work hybrid – with a base in Warrington or Stockton, and flexibility to balance on-site collaboration and remote delivery

Your Role:
You’ll be at the heart of our control systems capability—designing, developing, and testing database server solutions that integrate seamlessly with automation platforms. From requirements capture to system testing, you’ll ensure every solution is secure, scalable, and built to last.
You’ll collaborate with engineers across disciplines, support server deployment and virtualisation, and play a key role in formal testing and validation. Your documentation will set the standard—covering everything from URS and FDS to test specs and O&M manuals.

You’ll need to bring:

✅ Proven experience in database design and development—ideally within PLC/SCADA environments
✅ Strong SQL and Python skills, with a solid grasp of data modelling and optimisation
✅ Experience with VMWare, server deployment, and OS configuration
✅ A track record of producing high-quality technical documentation
✅ Confidence in formal testing, validation, and change control
✅ A collaborative mindset and the ability to work across disciplines
✅ Eligibilty to obtain SC level security clearance

Bonus points for:

✨ Experience in nuclear, MOD, or pharmaceutical sectors
☁️ Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
🔐 Knowledge of OT Cyber Security and secure system design
📘 Awareness of Sellafield Ltd standards and the V-Model
